Sweet Potato and Pumpkin Dog Treats

We've all been there right? Standing in the pet food isle reading the ingredient list to confirm if this fancy pet treat is what it claims to be. Okay, well maybe you don't actually read the back of the packaging on your pet food or treats (although I would strongly encourage you to) but I know you do in fact care about what you're feeding your pooches. I promise you that these autumn reminiscing treats will not disappoint even the

most finicky pooch and you can skip the high cost of good quality store bought treats.

These cookies compromise of 5 ingredients: sweet potatoes, pumpkin, oats, peanut butter and eggs. Sweet potatoes are rich in vitamins, minerals and fiber among other benefits like beta carotene; responsible for the orange flesh we all know so well. Pumpkin provides similar nutrition with the included benefits of antioxidants and fatty acids. Fascinatingly, pumpkin seeds also contain an amino acid, cucurbitin, which is not only anti-parasitic but can be used as a dewormer as well. Oats not only add texture to these treats but also possess linoleic acid and omega 6 fatty acids to maintain a healthy coat. Peanut butter is another healthy source of fat (monosaturated), double check the ingredients if using a low sugar peanut butter, xylitol can be substituted for sugar and is not safe for dogs, your pooch will also thank you for a natural peanut butter without all the added sugar and hydrogenated vegetable oils. Lastly, we add eggs to help combine all the ingredients, there is no argument here that eggs are wonderful for humans and canines alike, the cholesterol in eggs will also help your pup have shiny fur. Oh Boy!

So without further ado let's begin!

For the recipe:

  • 2 sugar pumpkins (or 1 small pumpkin)

  • 1 medium sweet potato

  • 2 cups oats

  • 1 cup peanut butter

  • 2 eggs

Instructions

1. Quarter pumpkins and steam in pot until tender (no need to scoop seeds out).

2. Peel sweet potato, slice into rounds and steam until soft.

3. After quarters have cooled, remove and discard pumpkin skin.

4. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.

5. Mix sweet potato and pumpkin together until combined.

6. Add oats, peanut butter and eggs to mixture, mix well.

7. Shape into small cookies and place on cookie sheet.

8. Cook until firm and slightly crispy, approximately 25-30 min.

Allow to cool before treating your pups to this delectable snack, they most likely already will be drooling in the background!
